Sample Ports of Call/Shore Excursions
Progreso, Yucatan, Mexico

    Sample shore excursions:
  • Dzibilchaltun Mayan Ruins Tour: Located approximately 20 kilometers from Puerto Progreso, the archaeological site of Dzibilchaltun (the locals pronounce it, dZeeble-TOON) is one of the most important ceremonial centers of the Mayan world. Although hardly as heavily visited as Chichen Itza, the name of this site means "The Place where there is Writing on the Stones" and it is the most ancient Mayan site and one of the largest. The site features many very important buildings as well as one of the most important Archeo- astronomical phenomena during the solstice and the equinox. Enjoy a visit to the quaint New Mayan World Museum, which houses many very beautiful pieces. There is also a large sinkhole, called Cenote de X'Lacah in which you can enjoy a refreshing swim after touring the ruins. This tour is ideal for those who want to experience the thrill of exploring a Mayan ruin without investing the entire day as required by the distance of the other locations.
  • Merida City & Mexican Rodeo Show Tour: This excursion offers the opportunity to visit the beautiful city of Merida as well as experiencing the incredible Mexican folkloric and equestrian shows at Rancho Tierra Bonita. An Approximate 45-minute ride takes you to Merida, where as you pass by, your guides will point out the most important sites that this magical city has to offer. After your tour of the city, it is on to Rancho Tierra Bonita where you will be entertained by a colorful folkloric ballet while enjoying a delicious Mexican buffet. Afterwards it is time to witness an incredible equestrian show in which famous Mexican Charros show off their skills with their lassoes and fine horses while accompanied by the music of the Mariachis. Before heading back to Progreso be sure to check out the various goods on display by the local artisans.
  • Colonial Izamal Tour: The Mayans originally founded the Yucatan's most perfect example of a Spanish Colonial city, Izamal in the fifth century A.D. The Spanish conquest brought friars who used the religious significance of Izamal to their advantage by building a huge convent on top of one of the main Mayan pyramids. Your tour of Izamal will focus on the Spanish Colonial aspects of the city. An approximate 90-minute drive takes you to the city where you will first tour the majestic Franciscan convent. Started by the infamous Friar Diego de Landa in 1553, it was completed by Friar Francisco de la Torre in 1561. The central Atrium of the convent is the second largest in the world and the stairways on the north and south sides were added so that wealthy Europeans could enter the building in style. Enjoy an authentic Yucatan lunch before touring the town in the horse drawn carriages, (known here as Victorias) passing by such sights as the Izamal City Hall, which dates from the 18th century and is the largest building of its kind in the Yucatan. You will also see cannons on display in the Parque de los Ca?ones, a legacy of turbulent 19th century conflicts.
  • Hacienda Jeep Expedition Tour: Enjoy an exciting off-road jeep expedition as you travel back in time through the low jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula visiting two authentic Mexican hacienda's dating back to the late 1800's. From the pier you will have a short orientation before being assigned to your jeep and hitting the road to explore the secrets of the Yucatan. Pass through the picturesque village of Progreso, before leaving civilization behind in favor of scenic marshlands and mangroves on your way to the haciendas. Pass through some sleepy local villages before veering of the paved road to your first destination, an abandoned hacienda. Stretch your legs and learn the history behind these once magnificent structures that flourished during the late 19th century. Getting back into the jeeps, you will proceed deeper into the savannas of Mexico arriving at a beautifully restored hacienda. Explore the beautifully manicured grounds, take a ride on the horse drawn train for a quick exploration of the nearby caves or just take a dip in the fresh water swimming pool. Experience some real Mexican hospitality with a cold drink and snack before the ride back to your ship.
