You can see this ancient art form and learn the meaning behind totem pole imagery at the Saxman Native Village and Totem Bight and the Totem Heritage Center. Sample shore excursions
    • Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show: Witness Alaska's frontier lumberjacks as they do battle against British Columbia's premier woodsmen in this no holds barred competition for the title of "Bull of the Woods". Watch as Alaska's rich and colorful history comes to life in this dramatic display of how the lumberjacks overcame the rugged and often hazardous Tongass Forest wilderness.
After a long winter of logging, hundreds of lumberjacks gathered to determine who was the best "jack" in Alaska. This show relives those competitions. World Champion athletes are featured in chopping, sawing, tree climbing, log rolling, and much more. All events are hosted by the colorful "Tale Twister", Janko, the camp cook. Education, entertainment, and excitement are all in store at The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show!

      Sample shore excursions:
    • Whale Watching and Wildlife Quest: This wildlife sightseeing cruise features guaranteed whale watching. Following a short motorcoach ride to scenic Auke Bay, you'll board a waterjet-powered catamaran specifically designed for wildlife viewing. Relax in the warm, comfortable, spacious main cabin, surrounded by large windows as your experienced captain guides you through the island-studded waters of Stephen's Passage. Against the majestic backdrop of snow-capped peaks and glaciers of the Juneau Icefield, the onboard naturalist will explain the behavior and habitat of wildlife you may encounter, including humpback and killer whales, Steller sea lions, Dall's porpoise, harbor seals, bald eagles, bears and Sitka blacktail deer.
The tour operator is so confident in the abundance of wildlife that they guarantee you will see a whale. If not, you'll receive a $100 cash refund ($50 per child) as you disembark the tour boat. Don't anticipate a refund; in the past six years whales have been sighted on every tour!

    Sitka, Alaska

Whether you're sampling fresh salmon, studying the symbolic artistry of Tlingit totem poles or taking a picture in front of the onion-domed cathedral, you'll find that Sitka has its own special beauty and charm. Once the capital of Russian America, you'll see relics from a czarist past in historic parks and museums.

      Sample shore excursions
    • Sitka Bike Tour: Embark on a guided adventure to experience a Sitka seldom seen by visitors. After a short drive to Theobroma Chocolate Factory, the starting point of your adventure, gear up, receive safety instructions and begin your bike ride on a path nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the mountains. Your ride passes Old Sitka, site of the historic battle between Tlingit Indians and the Russian Navy nearly 200 years ago, and crosses Starrigavin Creek, where, in season, you may see salmon spawning in the creek. Arrive at Starrigavin Campground, the starting point of your approximate 1.5 mile hike. Walk through the old growth forest as the naturalist-guide shares information about local Native lore, history, flora and fauna. Completing the loop trail, reboard your bike for the ride back to the Theobroma Chocolate Factory, your final stop before a relaxing return drive to the cruise ship pier.
    • Sea Life Discovery Semi-Submersible: The waters of the North Pacific, including Sitka Sound, are some of the most productive the world. On this tour, you'll board the Sea Life Discovery, Alaska's only semi-submersible tour vessel, and immerse yourself in this amazing underwater world while remaining comfortable, warm and dry.
Long hours of summer daylight and nutrient-rich currents support a wealth of sea life, while kelp forests and eelgrass beds are home to numerous plant and animal species. A local naturalist will provide background information about the marine environment of Sitka Sound and commentary on the passing sea life. Three marine habitats are explored - the rocky bottom, eel grass beds and the giant kelp forest. The kelp forests and eelgrass beds are home to numerous plant and animal species.
To enhance your viewing experience, a scuba diver enters the water with a hand held underwater camera, which sends live video to the monitors in your viewing area. The diver will gently handle some of the hardier sea inhabitants - sea urchins, starfish, crabs - bringing them right up to the outside of the vessels underwater windows. Traveling back to the dock you will be treated to a snack with a taste of kelp, and a chance to touch some of the marine life in the onboard open top aquarium.
    • Sitka Sportfishing: Sitka Sound and its adjacent waters are teeming with a wide variety of fish, dramatic views and wildlife. Board a fully equipped fishing vessel and your experienced captain will guide you to favorite spots for salmon fishing. If you wish, your catch can be prepared locally (flash frozen or smoked) and shipped to your home for an additional charge (US addresses only) payable at the conclusion of your tour.
