You'll see why the Riviera is the world's most legendary coastline once you visit Antibes, capital of Mediterranean yachting, and Nice, the "Capital of the French Riviera."
Antibes is a quaint town with a harbor, Port Vauban, considered the center of Mediterranean yachting. Overlooking some of the world's most prestigious yachts stands the 16th-century Fort Carre where Napoleon was once imprisoned. Founded by the Greeks and later the site of a significant Roman settlement, Antibes has remained remarkably unspoiled. You'll take a short walking tour of the picturesque old town with its 16th-century Grimaldi Chateau. Picasso spent five months there, executing such works as his incomparable La Joie de Vivre. Just below the castle, you'll pass through the Cours Massena with its fruit and vegetable market, to Bastion St. Andre, a part of the ancient ramparts and explore the grid of the old town with its vestiges of medieval France.
Nice, the Capital of the French Riviera, is filled with colorful flower markets and striking modern architecture and is the richest, most attractive tourist center outside Paris. During the orientation tour, you'll travel along the Promenade des Anglais. Resplendent with marching palms and flowerbeds, the little coastal road where English families used to parade in carriages is now a six-lane highway. You'll pass the modern heart of Nice, Massena Square, aglow with neo-classical red colonnades, fountains, gardens, hotels and a boutique-lined pedestrian zone housing all the big designer names. There will be time (approximately 45 minutes) to browse along the seaside or stroll through the colorful Old Town and Massena Square.
Note: The walk from the bus park in Antibes is approximately 0.5 mile uphill climb over uneven surfaces. The drive between Nice and Cannes is approximately 45 minutes, dependent upon traffic conditions. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
