View the Papantla Flyers display an aerial act, which has been passed down through generations and is truly a sight that is not to be missed.

Colonial Villages And Papantla Flyers

This tour offers you the unique opportunity to experience firsthand the life of the people in Mexico's villages, including a show performed by the daring Papantla Flyers. Departing the pier, your professional guide will provide historic information about Mazatlan before arriving at your first stop, an adobe brickyard. Watch as a worker creates bricks from mud for firing in a nearby kiln. Your guide will explain the simple process, which has been used for hundreds of years.

Your next stop will be in the small village of Malpica where you'll see how concrete tiles are made by hand. A short walk will then take you to the village baker's home, where you'll have the opportunity to peek into the interior of a local household and see the brick oven where the baked goods for the village come from. Before leaving, you'll be offered a sample of the baker's work. In the city of Concordia stop in what was once a thriving county seat for the region. Founded by Captain Francisco de Ibarra in 1550, the city is home to a hand-hewn stone church as well as a clay pottery factory and a colonial furniture factory.

Returning to Mazatlan stop to view the famous Papantla Flyers. As you sip a complimentary beer or soft drink, watch the Totonac Indians ascend a 75-foot pole and descend on ropes spinning around the pole to the ground. Before leaving the area, you'll have a few minutes on your own to browse or shop in the famous "Golden Zone." Your return drive to the pier will take you along the scenic waterfront and past the historic district of old Mazatlan.

Deer Island Adventure

Located a short distance from Mazatlan, La Isla de Los Venados (Deer Island) offers clean, clear waters and pristine beaches and is a getaway from the hectic bustle of the city. Your tour to this beautiful location begins with a short taxi transfer from the ship to the embarcadero, where you'll board a chartered motor boat for an approximate 40- minute trip around Ice Box Hill and across the channel to Deer Island.

Once on the island you'll have time to swim in the waters or enjoy lounging on the white-sand beach. You may also take an easy 30-45 minute guided hike to an overlook offering views of Mazatlan, the channel and the coast. The highlight of your tour will be an approximate 45-minute kayak trip through the calm waters on the protected side of the island. You'll be outfitted with a life vest and a qualified instructor/ guide will teach you the basic techniques for paddling your ocean kayak. No experience is necessary, as these two-person sit-on-top kayaks are fun, stable and easy to maneuver.

Leaving the shore, your kayak trip will pass rock formations and you may see some of the varieties of birds that nest on the island. At the conclusion of your trip, cool off with a beverage and a fruit snack. In the afternoon you'll board a motor boat for the ride from Deer Island to the pier on the mainland and the short taxi transfer to the ship. Weather permitting, you may board a small skiff for the short transfer to Las Flores Hotel located in Mazatlan's famous "Golden Zone." Guests who choose to travel to the zone will be responsible for returning to the ship independently.

Minimum age to participate is 7 years old. Guests should bring a towel and their bathing suits for the water portion of the tour and sturdy closed- toe shoes for the optional hike. A limited number of changing facilities are available on the island. Waterproof bags will be provided for the kayaking portion of the tour. Sunscreen, sunglasses, t-shirts and hats are recommended.

Sierra Madre, Concordia and Copala

During your drive make stops at an adobe brickyard, a colonial furniture factory and a pottery factory to view workers creating bricks and crafts in these interesting cottage industries. Within the Sierra Madre, stop to explore the fascinating villages of both Concordia and Copala. These once-thriving colonial towns, which hosted Spanish missionaries and gold prospectors, stand today in picturesque testimony to periods of Mexican history long gone. Concordia, founded in 1550, is best known for its baroque architecture, while the little town of Copala affords its own historic and quaint charm. A Mexican combination plate lunch will be served at a local restaurant for before returning to Mazatlan. After lunch, travel back through more scenery to the coastal city for a stop at the famous "Golden Zone." After a few minutes on your own to shop, re-board your motor coach for the short drive to the pier and the ship.
