| Travel back in time today as you explore
magnificent ancient ruins and sites dating back to the early days of
Christianity. Begin the adventure with a drive along the Aegean coast
to the town of Selcuk where you will visit the site of the Temple of
Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, a site that has been
destroyed and rebuilt seven times. Then visit the lovely medieval
Isabey Mosque which was built by Selcuk Turks and sits next to the
Basilica of St. John, where he is believed to be buried. View the
Selcuk Citadel and the now silted up valley before continuing on to the
ancient city of Ephesus.
Four thousand years ago Ephesus was an architectural masterpiece and a
thriving
gateway to Asia Minor. In Roman times it was the provincial capital
with a population of 250,000. It is featured in the scriptures and your
expert guide will bring the city back to life. You will enter this
magnificent city through the Magnesia Gate and as you stroll down the
marble streets you will pass the Odeon and upper Agora. Nearby is the
ornate Hadrian Temple and the restored façade of the
impressive Celsus Library− which once held 12,000 papyrus
scrolls, making it the ancient world’s second largest library
after Alexandria. Then pass the baths and the immense amphitheater that
could accommodate 24,000 spectators. It is still used today.
As you leave the city through the lower end you will see the remains of
the Gymnasium, the Stadium, the colonnaded harbor boulevard and the
ongoing excavations in lower Ephesus. Next enjoy a relaxing lunch in a
traditional setting in Selcuk.
Afterwards visit the Ephesus Archaeology Museum. Savor the many amazing
and
fascinating artifacts discovered in the city’s excavations
like statues of the Goddess
Artemis, beautiful frescoes from the houses and a wide variety of other
pieces. Don’t
miss the new exhibit of medical instruments found in the area. Then
enjoy the panoramic views of the valley as you make your way back to
Kusadasi where you can conclude this fantastic visit by browsing for
interesting souvenirs in the city’s bazaar and many
interesting shops.
