Begin your day in Montserrat, a peculiar rocky mountain range which is the site of the monastery where people come to worship 'La Moreneta,' the black Madonna who is the patron-virgin of Catalonia. Besides visiting the Benedictine Abbey Monastery, you'll also admire the Patron of Catalonia, Saint Mary of Montserrat that is worshipped at the shrine in the Monastery. The Benedictine community, now numbering some eighty monks, has served the shrine for almost a thousand years.
Besides the monks, the escolans also live in Montserrat and they form the oldest boys' choir in Europe. After lunch, you'll be driven to Barcelona to enjoy the highlights of the city. Your city sightseeing begins with a panoramic drive along Passeig de Gracia, the best-known boulevard in town.
Along the way, your guide will point out some of Gaudi's architectural masterpieces: the Casa Mila or better-known by Barcelonians as 'La Pedrera House' and Casa Batllo. The most famous work by Gaudi is the Sagrada Familia Temple; from the outside, your guide will offer an in-depth explanation of all the details related to the Temple. Proceed to Montjuic Hill, which was claimed by the city for the 1929 International Exposition. This is when the mountain was developed and is now the most important recreational area in Barcelona.
You'll pass through the Olympic Ring and make a brief stop at the Mirador del Alcalde from where you can get the perfect panoramic photograph. From here you'll continue to the Gothic Quarter to visit the 13th century cathedral.
Inside you'll find the crypt of Santa Eulalia as well as an impressive choir structure and the 15th century Chapel of Santo Cristo de Lepanto. Enjoy a relaxing walk through the Gothic Quarter where the remains of the Roman city survive alongside Medieval buildings; all are witnesses to a splendid past.
Note: This tour returns to the ship and is only available for passengers embarking and disembarking in Valletta, Malta.
