Colorfully painted fishing boats line the harbors of the small villages, and the surrounding countryside is a gently rolling landscape of little towns nestled in green valleys. The capital of The People's Republic of China covers an area of some 6,870 square miles and boasts a population of over 11 million people. Beijing has been the seat of power in China since the days of Kublai Khan. At the heart of this immense metropolis lies the Forbidden City. Two more examples of China's enduring culture are The Great Wall and Tiananmen Square.
- The Great Wall.
One of the largest building construction projects ever completed, the Great Wall stretches across the mountains of northern China, winding its way for more than 4,000 miles to Beijing. Constructed of various materials -- from packed earth to kiln-fired bricks -- it is an engineering feat and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Forbidden City.
This 250-acre complex of palaces, pavilions and courtyards was the home of China's emperor, the fabled "Son of Heaven," from 1421 to 1911. Even the most seasoned travelers will experience a sense of awe as they enter through the magnificent Meridian Gate.
- Tiananmen Square.
The dramatic scene of political struggle and unrest, Tiananmen Square is the largest public square in the world, and because of its immense size, it will accommodate up to one million people.
