This guided city drive takes in Bangkok’s highlights for passengers who wish to explore the city with little walking. Visit an 18th century Buddhist temple complex and enjoy free time for shopping.
- WHAT YOU VISIT
Wat Suthat - Built during the second quarter of the 18th century, this Buddhist temple complex features a huge, bronze, 15th-century image of the Buddha in Sukothai style. Frescoes adorn the walls of the bot, or ordination hall. Carved teak doors and 156 golden Buddhas line the exterior of the wihan or assembly hall.
- PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Giant Swing - Opposite Wat Suthat stand red teak pillars once used in the Brahman "Ceremony of the Swing." Before being discontinued in 1932, the ceremony required young Hindu priests to swing a full 180 degrees from the pillars to snatch a bag of gold coins with their teeth. Many died during the attempt.
Jedsadabordin Ground - Also known as the City Pavilion, this square offers excellent photo opportunities of the Golden Mountain and Radchanadda Temples, two ancient forts, and sections of the old city walls.
- SHOPPING
Browse through the Arts and Crafts Market for souvenirs, local handicrafts and jewelry items.
- LUNCH
A lunch buffet featuring international dishes is served at a local restaurant.
- WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Board your motorcoach at the pier and travel through Bangkok. In Bangkok, your route takes you through Chinatown and the Royal Parks. Drive past the Democracy Monument, the Grand Palace, the Emerald Buddha Temple, the National Museum, the sacred City Pillar, the Reclining Buddha Temple (Wat Pho), the Royal Pier, the Temple of the Dawn (Wat Arun) and various government offices.
- SPECIAL NOTES
While casual dress is suggested for this tour, suitable attire is required for palace and temple visits. Shorts are not permitted. Women must have their shoulders and knees covered. Turtleneck shirts for men are not allowed. Wear comfortable low-heeled, closed-toe (no open toes or heels) shoes. Footwear must be removed before entering temples.
