The Art Of Ryukyu Bingata Tour

The Art Of Ryukyu Bingata Tour Once produced solely for Okinawa’s warrior class, bingata is a multicolored dyeing process used for silk and vegetable fibers. Learn the secrets of the art and produce your very own piece of Ryukyu bingata. Then set out on a tour of Shurijo Castle.

  • WHAT YOU VISIT
Ryukyu Bingata - Bingata-dyed fabric has been produced in the Ryukyu Islands since the 15th century. It is thought that the multi-coloured dyeing process was introduced from southern China. Discover the secrets of this ancient art from creating a complex pattern to alternating light and dark dyes. At the end of the class, you have produced a piece of traditional bingata as a souvenir of your visit.
Shurijo Castle - The vermilion-colored castle was the seat of power during the 500-year reign of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Destroyed in World War II and rebuilt 1992, the castle is surrounded by beautiful gates leading to the Seiden or Main Hall.

  • PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Shureimon Gate - Built during the reign of Sho Sei (1527-1555), the gate is inscribed Shurei-no’kuni – ‘The Ryukyus are a land of propriety’.

  • WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY Board your air-conditioned motorcoach at the pier for the approximately 30-minute drive to Ryukyu-no-Yakata. After your bingata class, continue to Naha. Pass Ryutan Pond en route to Shurijo Castle.

  • SPECIAL NOTES Wear casual clothes – the bingata dyeing process will leave permanent stains on clothing. After returning from your tour, you will need to wash and steam iron your bingata. Photography is permitted on the grounds of Shurijo Castle but not in the castle museum. Visitors to Shurijo Castle must negotiate steep steps and uneven surfaces. The castle is not wheel chair accessible. Not recommended for passengers with limited mobility. Wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes. Shoes must be removed during the visit to main hall of Shurijyo Castle. This tour has a limited capacity The Ryukyu Kingdom Festival will be held in the Shurijyo Castle area on November 1, 2008. Passengers should expect road restrictions, possible detours, crowds and delays. Tour itineary may be modified.
