The name Ocho Rios means eight rivers, but the one word to describe Jamaica is inspiring. Its sun-drenched canvas of blue-green mountains, white-sand beaches and turquoise waters makes this island nation one of the most wonderful destinations in all of the Caribbean. From the warm breezes that blow under cloudless blue skies, to the cool waters of the mountain streams that lead to the sea, and the fragrant flowers that drape the rolling hills, Jamaica entices her visitors with a feast for the senses.

Located just a few miles from downtown, Prospect Plantation is a journey back in time to Jamaica’s colonial days. Tour the former plantation on a tractor-drawn jitney as your local guide recounts the plantation’s history. Seasonal crops include bananas, sugar cane, coffee, pineapple, and papaya. Continue on to Dunn’s River Falls, where crystalline waters cascade 600 feet down a giant rock staircase to the Caribbean Sea. Climb to the top of the slippery falls with your experienced guide, or use the adjacent stone staircase. Stop at duty-free shopping zone before returning to the ship.

Board your air- conditioned coach at the pier and drive to Wassi Art, where some of Jamaica’s finest pottery is produced. Take a brief tour of the factory and see how talented Jamaican artists create exquisite individual pieces. Then pay a visit to the gift shop. Your drive continues through Fern Gully. This old riverbed takes its name from the hundreds of varieties of ferns found here. Head inland across the lush, rolling hills of St. Ann to the country village of Moneague. Make a brief stop at the old Moneague Hotel, built in the early 1800s and the parish’s first inn, and at the village’s small, stone Anglican Church. Then it’s time for lunch at Café Aubergine, a restaurant housed in the original Moneague Tavern. The building has been designated a National Monument by Jamaica’s Heritage Trust. Several international magazines have recognized Café Aubergine’s superb fusion of Mediterranean and Jamaican cuisine. After lunch, return to the ship via the same route.

Board your air- conditioned coach and drive through Fern Gully, an old river course that is home to over 200 species of ferns, to Cole Gate Village. At Cole Gate Village, shop for local arts and crafts before touring the pottery factory at Wassi Arts. Wassi Arts produces some of Jamaica’s finest hand-turned and hand-painted pottery. Continue to Harmony Hall. Built in the early 19th century, the Hall is a designated National Monument and home to a superb art galley as well as Jamaica’s famed Toscanini Restaurant. Explore the gallery, located on the second floor, and its collection of Caribbean folk art before descending to the restaurant for a four-course lunch that includes a welcome drink, soup, appetizer, main course and dessert, accompanied by a selection of fine wines and Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. After lunch, continue to the new Island Village complex for more shopping. From Island Village it’s a short, five-minute walk back to the ship.

Board your air conditioned coach for the approximately 40-minute drive to Green Grotto Caves in Discovery Bay. Located near Columbus’ 1494 landing site, the caves are over five million years old and once harbored Taino Indians and runaway slaves. Your guided tour of the Grotto explores the caverns’ interconnecting passages, chambers, light holes, stalactites and stalagmites as well as two lakes. See limestone formations that have been christened after the individuals they resemble, including Abraham Lincoln, Freddie Krueger, and cartoon character, Scooby Doo among others. Your guide demonstrates the cave’s musical stones and you can make a wish at the wishing will. Enjoy a refreshing beverage at the end of your tour.
