With miles of lush tropical rain forest, a gorgeous Caribbean coastline and the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, it doesn't take long to realize why Belize City is known as “The Jewel.” Located between Mexico and Guatemala, Belize City possesses a unique combination of modernity and rustic Caribbean charm. Ancient ruins indicate that Belize was first inhabited by the Mayans in 900 A.D. In 1638, the first European settlers, known as the Bayman, arrived from Britain. For the next 150 years, the British and Spanish fought over Belize. With a decisive victory at the Battle of St. George's Caye in 1798, the British won control. It wasn't until September 21, 1981, however, that Belize achieved full independence.

Travel across the rolling hills of Western Belize to the Mopan River located near the Guatemalan border.
A hand-cranked ferry awaits to take you across the river, where you will board a shuttle to the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich (Maiden of the Rock) Plaza several hundred feet above.
Your guide will share his extensive knowledge of the Mayan civilization and the Xunantunich site.
From El Castillo, the tallest temple at the site, you’ll have a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and portions of Guatemala.
Afterwards, travel by bus to the San Ignacio Hotel for a Mayan-style buffet lunch accompanied by music from a local Marimba band.
