Home to 17 million people and spanning over 3,000 square miles, São Paulo is the third-largest city in the world. The warm climate and red clay soil surrounding the city are perfect for growing coffee. And with the arrival of the railway in 1867, large-scale cultivation took hold. Today, São Paulo is one of the largest coffee exporters in the world. As the coffee industry grew, so did the need for labor. São Paulo was one of the first cities in Brazil to actively encourage immigration. It has evolved into an exciting melting pot of cultures.
Sample Fun Things to Do:
- São Paulo is the commercial heart of Brazil. Wander the busy pedestrian streets of the old downtown neighborhood of Centro to see locals hard at work, buying, selling and trading. For a look at where they go after work, explore Avenida Paulista. There you'll see stylish Paulistas out for a stroll, shopping and enjoying the fruits of their labor.
- Paulistas like their sports like everything else - fast. Horse racing is popular here at the Jockey Clube de São Paulo. And Formula 1 Grand Prix races come every year to great acclaim. Even non-racing sports are fast-paced here. Footbal (soccer) is the true passion. The big clubs in town are São Paulo, Corinthians, Palmeiras, and Portuguesa. Catch a match between some of these popular teams. The games, and the crowd response, are usually exciting.

Once home to pirates and slave-traders, Buzios is a beach-lined peninsula jutting out into the sea. Made famous by Brigitte Bardot in the 1960s, today its beautiful beaches are frequented by the rich and famous. It's the perfect place to play all day in the sand and surf, then play all night in the clubs and bars.
Sample Fun Things to Do:
- Everyone who comes to Buzios comes for the beaches. There are 20 different beaches within a few kilometers of town, each set off from the others by the area's unique topography. Their separation has allowed each beach to develop its own unique personality. For surfing and fun, head to Geribá Beach. For snorkeling and diving, you'll want to check out quiet, deep Ferruda Beach. And if you want to see and be seen, make your way to Ossos Beach, where you can sip caipirinhas at a café while you watch the world go by.
- With so many beaches, there is something to please almost any watersport enthusiast here. On most beaches, you can rent equipment right on the beach. Head to the beaches on the east coast - facing the open water - for surfing, windsurfing, sailing, and other more adventurous sports.
- Owing to its heritage as a fishing village, and its oceanfront location, fish and seafood are the most popular local dishes here. If you're looking for a memorable meal, go to Joao Fernandinho Beach where you'll find several bars and restaurants where the seafood is fresh and delicious.

Cabo Frio got its name - "Cold Cape" - from the low temperature of the sea water there. A unique submarine current brings cold water up from the South Pole to the coast nearby. But the cold water is more than compensated for by the beautiful scenery in this unique beach resort. The beaches have fine white sand shaped into striking dunes. And the picturesque windmills used in salt production stand out in stark contrast to the bright blue of the sea and sky.
Sample Fun Things to Do:
- The most famous beach in Cabo Frio is Forte Beach, where the fortress of Saint Mathews was built in 1620. Stretching 7.5 kilometers, the beach is located in the heart of the town near many bars and restaurants. Head all the way to the left end to explore the fort and get a panoramic view you won't forget.
- The unique tides and submarine current bring large blue marlin and sailfish close to the shore here. In fact, one of the largest blue marlins in the world was caught here. Head out on a charter boat if you want to try your luck. But be sure to bring your arm strength too - these fish are big.
- If you want to fit in on the beach in Brazil, you'll need a bikini. And there's no better place to buy one than Gamboa Street, also known as the Bikini Street. You'll find more than 200 shops here specializing in beach wear at low prices. Bikinis, sarongs, sandals, shorts - if you wear it on the beach, you'll find it here.
