Bridgetown, Barbados. Though Barbados gained its independence from the British in 1966, the island maintains a distinctly British flavor. From British products such as chocolate and china to the national pastime, cricket, the British influence is evident throughout Barbados. Traditional plantations, delicate flowers and rum are the trademarks of Barbados. Tour a colonial plantation home or a rum distillery. Investigate the island's floral treasures in the Flower Forest. See remote parts of the island rarely seen by visitors on a 4X4 driving adventure.

Enjoy panoramic views and learn about island culture and history on this comprehensive tour of Barbados. Your first stop is Gun Hill Signal Station, a small museum with lovely gardens. It was one of the key links in the series of signal stations that were installed by the British militia in 1818. Situated 700 feet above sea level, it commands a sweeping view of the southern half of the island. Continuing across the countryside through quaint villages, you'll arrive at St. John's Church. Set on a cliff 800 feet above sea level, the church has a panoramic view of the east coast. Finally, enjoy a stop at Sunbury Plantation House & Museum for a complimentary beverage before returning to the ship.

Starting at the pier, the tour begins by going through Bridgetown, the island's capital and main shopping area. During the island drive you will journey through Holetown, where the British first landed and past Gun Hill.
As you travel through the Barbadian countryside, you will observe the more rural side of the island. Continue on to Harrison's Cave, which is claimed as one of the world's finest. Board a quiet electric tram for an experience of underground splendor of waterfalls, stalagmites (built up from the floor in natural formation), and stalactites (hanging down from above), all created by water dripping over thousands of years. Very clever lighting has been installed to illuminate the truly natural wonders.
The tour will then proceed to the Andromeda Gardens. This lovely area was started up more than 20 years ago and is set up against a hillside on the Atlantic Coast. A small stream cascades between exotic tropical plants, forming pools and waterfalls. Huge limstone boulders create a natural rock garden planted with bougainvillaea, orchids, tropcial palms, and ferns.

This unique and original tour begins from the passenger terminal of the Bridgetown Port. After a short drive through Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, and along the south coast of the tranquil Caribbean Sea, the tour turns inland through the areas of Rendezvous, Haggatt Hall (the Emancipation Statue), Salter's, Charlesrowe Bridge and Gun Hill.
The first stop, Orchid World, was officially opened in December 1998. Thousands of orchids are grown in shaded houses and outside on freestanding palisades. There are two Vandaceous houses, Phalaenopsis and Cattlyeas, two Dendrobium and a special propagation area. There is a fascination to the sight of orchid plants growing in mid-air, with their roots free of soil. Strategically placed information boards offer facts about the plants and a friendly staff is nearby to answer any questions.
Fisherpond Plantation House, built in 1635, is the second stop, where you are greeted with a welcome rum/fruit punch on arrival. Fisherpond has been featured in such publications as: British Homes and Gardens, Spanish Vogue, Red Magazine and Town and Country, for its unique Barbadian architecture, antique furnishings throughout and manicured gardens. The resident owner, Mr. John Chandler, specializes in the building and repair of 18th and 19th century crystal chandeliers and guests may visit his workshop. The subject of Violet, a child who frequents Fisherpond House, along with two other friends, has been featured on the Diane Petty Show in Canada. Violet and friends were, of course, born in the 17th-18th century.
The return journey to the port is via Market Hill, Locust Hall, Hothersal Turning, Warrens, The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus and the Spring Garden Highway.
Climb into a comfortable safari-rigged Land Rover and prepare yourself for adventure. With a driver/guide, you will visit places that are inaccessible to tour buses, but no problem for 4x4 vehicles. The convoy will wind its way through Fisherpond Sugar Cane Estate and Coffee Gully, before arriving at St. John's Church built in 1645. From this vantage point, witness panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Eastern coastline of Barbados. See hidden bays at scenic Bathsheba where refreshments will be served. After Bathsheba, the convoy goes off-road again, traveling downhill into Cattlewash while viewing miles of beautiful beaches. You will pass Holetown, where the British landed in 1625, and many of the island's finest homes before arriving at Paradise Beach. There a brief stop will be made for refreshments and a swim before heading back to the ship.
