Skagway, Alaska. When gold was discovered in the Klondike region of the Yukon Territory, (just across the border from Alaska), it resulted in the historic Gold Rush of 1898. As thousands of gold-crazed adventurers sought the best jumping-off spot for their arduous trek, they found the deepest penetration by boat was at the northern tip of the Lynn Canal. That is how Skagway was born.

No trip to Alaska is complete without the adventure of traveling on the White Pass & Yukon Route, the "Scenic Railway of the World. " This narrow gauge railroad was built during the Klondike Gold Rush and is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Over a hundred years later it is still in operation exclusively for excursions through some of the North's most rugged landscape.
The train climbs to the 2,865-foot summit in approximately 20 minutes and features steep grades of 3.9% and cliff hanging turns of 16 degrees. Experience the breathtaking panorama of mountains, glaciers, gorges, waterfalls, tunnels, trestles and historic sites from the comfort of 1890's-style parlor cars. See Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point, Dead Horse Gulch and the original Klondike "Trail of '98".
Travel 65 miles by motor coach, following the Skagway River Canyon and winding over the summit of White Pass, into Canada 's scenic and historic Yukon Territory. Your guide will explain the natural and Klondike history of the area as you pass through glacial-carved valleys, such as the infamous Tormented Valley, and see landmarks including the White Pass and Yukon Railway and the actual Trail of '98. Stop at the village of Carcross and to explore the historic town site along famous Lake Bennett. After a barbecue lunch, stroll through a wildlife gallery viewing representations of birds and mammals indigenous to the Yukon. On your return trip, your motor coach can drop you off in downtown Skagway, or you may return directly to the ship.
Retrace the path of the Klondike gold stampeders, coasting down from the White Pass summit on a mountain bike! Your tour starts with a narrated van ride to the top of the pass. After a bicycle and safety orientation, your experienced guides will escort you approximately 15 miles by bike from summit to sea on the Klondike road. Make stops for photos of waterfalls, the railroad, glaciers, and the coastal mountains on your way to Skagway. This is a unique way to tour Skagway and the surrounding area.
See the remains of what was once a city of 10,000 greedy stampeders as you wind your way through one of Alaska 's most breathtaking valleys just as the original stampeders did...on horseback! Your journey begins with a tour by van through historic Skagway, then across some of Alaska 's backcountry wilderness and into the Klondike Gold Rush National Park. The adventure on horseback will begin deep in the heart of Dyea Valley and bring you to its original town site near the waterfront. Along the way your guides will constantly be tickling your ears with stories of the area 's gold rush history "Sourdough" style. Riders of all experience levels are welcome to participate as running of the horses is not allowed on the trip, just an easy walk or trot to give everyone plenty of time to enjoy the scenery. After your ride fresh Alaskan smoked salmon pate is provided before returning to Skagway.
