Overview
Darwin Bay is a horseshoe-shaped bay on Genovesa Island (also known as Tower Island) in the Galápagos Archipelago. It is actually a flooded volcanic caldera. This remote site is a paradise for birdwatchers and snorkelers, known for its incredible density and diversity of unique wildlife.
Darwin Bay is a vital cruise visitor site exclusively accessed by Galápagos expedition cruises. Visitors usually reach the white coral beach via a wet landing from Zodiacs (dinghies). It's not a commercial port, but a pristine natural reserve where guided excursions focus entirely on wildlife observation and conservation.
Hike an easy trail from the beach to observe a vast array of seabirds. Spot Red-footed Boobies nesting in mangroves, Nazca Boobies, Swallow-tailed Gulls, and various finches.
Tip: Genovesa is often called "Bird Island" for its incredible avian population. Bring binoculars!
Enjoy snorkeling in the clear waters of Darwin Bay. You'll likely encounter curious and playful Galápagos sea lions, as well as colorful reef fish, rays, and sometimes even hammerhead sharks.
Tip: Sea lions are very interactive; give them space but enjoy their playful swimming.
Participate in a guided Zodiac (panga) ride around the bay. This allows for close-up views of nesting birds on the cliffs and marine life from the water.
Tip: Look for frigatebirds, tropicbirds, and other species perched along the rocky shorelines.
Darwin Bay is one of the best places to see the Red-footed Booby, known for their distinctive red feet. Observe their nesting habits and unique behaviors up close.
Tip: Their nests are often in trees and shrubs near the trail, making for excellent viewing.
Gain insight into the famous Darwin's Finches, which helped Charles Darwin develop his theory of evolution. Various species of finches can be observed here.
Tip: Your naturalist guide will explain the evolutionary significance of these iconic birds.
Discover small tidal pools along the beach. These pools can harbor a variety of small marine creatures, including crabs and sometimes juvenile fish.
Tip: Be mindful of your footing and avoid disturbing any wildlife in these delicate ecosystems.
