Overview
Davos is globally recognized as the highest city in Europe, situated at an altitude of approximately 1,560 meters (5,120 feet) in the Swiss Alps. It is most famous for hosting the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) and for its historical significance as a health resort due to its pristine, high‑altitude climate. The town is surrounded by spectacular mountains, making it a year‑round destination: a sprawling winter sports paradise and a beautiful summer hiking and biking haven.
Davos is located in the Graubünden canton, a region known for its dramatic mountain landscapes and unique cultural blend, where German, Italian, and Romansh are spoken. Whether you are interested in world-class skiing, exploring Expressionist art, or simply breathing the clean mountain air, Davos offers a sophisticated and invigorating Alpine experience.
Parsenn is the largest and most famous of the Davos‑Klosters ski areas. In winter, enjoy expansive slopes. In summer, take the funicular or cable car up to the Weissfluhjoch peak for hiking trails and breathtaking views of over 200 mountain peaks.
Tip: Start early in the morning for the best visibility and fewer crowds at the summits.
This central boulevard runs through the length of the town and is the hub of activity, featuring high-end shops, restaurants, cafes, and hotels. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll, people-watching, and enjoying the Alpine architecture.
Tip: The promenade is a great place to pick up traditional Swiss chocolate or local crafts.
Dedicated to the work of German Expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, who lived and worked in Davos from 1918 until his death. The museum’s collection is outstanding, and the building itself is a striking example of modern architecture.
Tip: Kirchner’s paintings often feature the surrounding Davos landscape, which is fascinating to compare with the view outside.
Even a short journey on the regional Rhaetian Railway offers one of the world's most scenic train rides. The line passes through dramatic gorges and over incredible viaducts, connecting Davos to other famous resorts like St. Moritz.
Tip: This is a UNESCO World Heritage route; try to sit on the side of the train facing the valley for the best views.
Take the historic funicular up to the Schatzalp, an area famous for its historic sanatorium, which inspired Thomas Mann's novel, The Magic Mountain. Today, it offers peaceful trails, a beautiful botanical garden (summer), and a panoramic restaurant.
Tip: The Schatzalp offers a summer toboggan run, which is a fun, age-appropriate activity for the whole family!
In winter, visit the Vaillant Arena, one of the world's most famous hockey rinks, or skate on the natural ice rink on frozen Lake Davos. In summer, Lake Davos is perfect for sailing, paddle-boarding, or relaxing by the water.
Tip: Check if the famous Spengler Cup ice hockey tournament is running if you visit around Christmas.
