Overview
Floreana Island, also known as Santa María, is one of the smaller, yet historically rich, islands in the Galapagos archipelago, located south of Santa Cruz Island. It is particularly renowned for its unique human history, including tales of European settlers, pirates, and early whalers, which give it a distinct atmosphere compared to the other volcanic islands. The island's landscapes feature dramatic volcanic terrain, quiet beaches, and lagoons, but its main attractions are tied to its intriguing past and the specific wildlife found in its protected areas.
While Floreana does not have a large established port, cruise vessels typically anchor offshore, utilizing smaller zodiac boats (pangas) to shuttle guests to designated landing sites like Post Office Bay or Punta Cormorant. The island is less populated than its neighbors, offering a quieter, more intimate encounter with the Galapagos ecosystem. It serves as an essential stop for visitors looking to combine natural history with the fascinating, eccentric human narrative that defines the island.
Participate in the Galapagos' most famous, low-tech postal tradition dating back to the 18th century. Visit the wooden barrel, drop off a letter (without postage), and search through existing letters to hand-deliver one to its destination. This site perfectly blends human history with the natural landscape.
Tip: Bring a few pre-addressed, unstamped postcards from home to participate fully in this unique historical exchange.
Walk along a nature trail leading from a crystal-white beach (made of pulverized coral) to an olivine green beach. The trail culminates at a brackish lagoon which is one of the best sites in the Galapagos for spotting American flamingos, pintails, and various wading birds.
Tip: The flamingos are most active and visible during the early morning hours, so prioritize this excursion if possible.
This offshore volcanic cone offers one of the best snorkeling sites in the Galapagos. The eroded, jagged structure creates a natural habitat teeming with marine life, including parrotfish, colorful reef fish, sea turtles, sea lions, and possibly even Galapagos penguins.
Tip: The currents here can be strong; ensure you are comfortable swimming and wear a full-body wetsuit for warmth and protection.
Take a tour into the highlands to learn about the island's enigmatic human history. Visit the original settlement areas, including sites associated with the Wittmer family, and see the caves once used by pirates and early colonists. This offers a change of scenery from the coastal areas.
Tip: Wear insect repellent when visiting the moist highland areas, as mosquitoes can be prevalent.
The main landing sites often feature colonies of playful Galapagos sea lions. These inquisitive mammals frequently approach visitors, providing incredible close-up photo opportunities and entertainment. Remember to always maintain the mandated distance from the animals.
Tip: Watch for the younger sea lions practicing their swimming and fishing skills close to the shore; they are particularly entertaining.
While the island is known for flamingos, you can often spot blue-footed boobies fishing offshore or nesting along the rocky coasts. Their distinctive bright blue feet and comical fishing dives make them a favorite subject for wildlife watchers.
Tip: Keep your eyes focused on the water, watching for them dive-bombing headfirst into the sea to catch fish.
