Overview
Isola di Stromboli is the northeasternmost and most dramatic of the seven Aeolian Islands, located off the northern coast of Sicily, Italy. This small, rugged island is entirely dominated by its active volcano, also named Stromboli, which is famous for its almost continuous and gentle "Strombolian" eruptions – a type of volcanic activity named after the island itself. Nicknamed the "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean," the volcano offers a mesmerizing spectacle of glowing lava fragments, ash, and gas being thrown into the air at regular intervals.
Beyond its fiery heart, Stromboli boasts picturesque villages with traditional white-washed houses, unique black volcanic sand and pebble beaches, and a serene, almost car-free existence. For a less strenuous but equally mesmerizing experience, take a night boat trip to the Sciara del Fuoco. This steep, black lava scar on the northwestern flank of the volcano is where incandescent lava.

Stromboli is characterized by its distinctive black volcanic sand. Popular spots include Ficogrande (the largest and only organized beach with facilities), Scari Beach (near the main port). These beaches offer a unique setting for swimming.
Tip: The black sand can get very hot under the sun.
Wander through the lovely, narrow streets of San Vincenzo, the main village on the island. Visit the Church of San Vincenzo and its piazza for panoramic views of the port and the dramatic Strombolicchio islet.
Tip: Look for the "Red House" where film director Roberto Rossellini and actress Ingrid Bergman lived.
Take a short boat trip or view from the coast the striking Strombolicchio, a small, rugged volcanic sea stack located just off the northeast coast of Stromboli. This is a lovely stop to enjoy slowly.
Tip: It offers a fantastic photo opportunity, especially at sunset.
Savor fresh local seafood and traditional Aeolian dishes at the island's restaurants. While not a party island, Stromboli offers a few bars and a couple of open-air clubs by the sea (like La Tartana).
Tip: Try the local Malvasia wine with fresh Aeolian seafood.
