A unique double temple on the Nile River in Egypt.

4.9/5 ⭐Google 650+ Reviews | A+ Better Business Bureau

Overview
Kom Ombo is an agricultural town in Upper Egypt, uniquely positioned on the eastern bank of the Nile River, approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) north of Aswan. Its fame primarily stems from the remarkable Temple of Kom Ombo, an unusual "double temple" that stands majestically at the river's edge. What sets this temple apart is its symmetrical design, with two perfectly mirrored halves, each dedicated to a different set of deities.
Built during the Ptolemaic Dynasty (180–47 BC) with some additions during the Roman period, the temple's southern half honors the crocodile god Sobek (god of fertility and creator of the world) and his associated deities, while the northern half is dedicated to the falcon god Haroeris (Horus the Elder) and his family. Kom Ombo is a quintessential stop on almost all Nile River cruises, offering visitors a fascinating insight into ancient Egyptian religious practices, medicine (with intriguing reliefs depicting surgical instruments), and the unique veneration of crocodiles.
The main attraction is the Temple of Kom Ombo itself. Take your time to explore its unique symmetrical layout, with two parallel entrances, courtyards, hypostyle halls, and sanctuaries dedicated to Sobek and Haroeris. Marvel at the well-preserved hieroglyphs, reliefs, and the famous "calendar" of ancient Egyptian festivals.
Tip: The temple is particularly stunning at sunrise or sunset when the limestone glows. Many Nile cruises stop here in the evening, with the temple beautifully illuminated.
Adjacent to the Temple of Kom Ombo is the small but fascinating Crocodile Museum. It houses a collection of mummified crocodiles, some quite large, discovered in the vicinity of the temple. The museum provides context on the ancient Egyptians' worship of Sobek and the significance of crocodiles in their beliefs.
Tip: The museum entrance is usually included with your temple ticket. It offers a unique insight into a specific aspect of ancient Egyptian religion.
Look closely at some of the reliefs within the temple, particularly on the inner face of the rear wall. One remarkable carving is believed to depict a set of ancient surgical instruments, offering a rare glimpse into the advanced medical knowledge of the ancient Egyptians.
Tip: A knowledgeable guide will be able to point out these specific and highly interesting reliefs.
Within the temple complex, you'll find a Nilometer, an ancient structure used by the Egyptians to measure the water levels of the Nile River. This was crucial for predicting the annual flood and managing agricultural irrigation, highlighting the practical aspects of temple life.
Tip: Understanding the Nilometer's function helps appreciate the ancient Egyptians' ingenuity and reliance on the Nile.
The Temple of Kom Ombo is dramatically situated right on the banks of the Nile. Take a moment to simply enjoy the picturesque riverside setting, watching feluccas (traditional sailboats) glide by and observing daily life along the river.
Tip: The temple's location makes it one of the most accessible and visually striking stops on a Nile cruise.
Near the temple entrance, you'll find a small market area where local vendors sell Egyptian souvenirs, including textiles, alabaster crafts, papyrus, and spices. It's an opportunity to pick up a memento of your visit.
Tip: Be prepared to haggle politely for prices, a common practice in Egyptian markets.
