Kuannit is a stunning natural area located on the southern coast of Disko Island (Qeqertarsuaq) in West Greenland. It is renowned for its dramatic and unique geological formations, specifically its impressive basalt columns that rise majestically from the coastline. The name "Kuannit" itself is Greenlandic for the Angelica plant (Angelica archangelica), which grows abundantly and contributes to the area's surprisingly lush and verdant vegetation, especially during the brief Arctic summer. Embark on a hike from Qeqertarsuaq town to here. The trail, often marked with yellow signs, leads you through diverse terrain. These hexagonal rock structures are a striking result of ancient volcanic lava cooling.
Tip: The hike to the basalt columns is moderate, with black sand beaches along the trail.
While hiking through the area, pay close attention to the lush vegetation. Despite being in the Arctic, the area's volcanic soil and thermal springs create a fertile environment. Look for the abundant Angelica plants (Kuanni).
Tip: If visiting in summer, the wildflowers are particularly beautiful.
Explore the numerous waterfalls and small streams that cascade down the basalt cliffs into the sea. These are fed by the area's natural hot springs. Some areas might even have visible steam or warmer pockets.
