These iconic walls, which have remained fully intact since the 17th century, are Lucca's most defining feature and have been transformed into a tree-lined promenade that circles the entire city. Unlike its more bustling Tuscan neighbors, Lucca offers a tranquil and relaxed atmosphere, inviting visitors to slow down and savor its medieval charm.
A day trip to Lucca is a journey through time, where you can walk or cycle along the city walls, explore ancient Roman ruins, climb historic towers for panoramic views, and discover the birthplace of the famous composer Giacomo Puccini. Its quiet, cobbled streets and beautiful piazzas are perfect for leisurely strolls and offer a quintessential Tuscan experience that is both authentic and unforgettable.
The most famous and enjoyable activity here is to walk or cycle along the top of the city walls. The 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) promenade is wide, flat, and lined with trees.
Tip: Bicycles can be rented from several shops just inside the gates.
For the best panoramic view, climb the Guinigi Tower, a medieval tower topped with a small grove of oak trees. The view from the top is spectacular, offering a great photo opportunity.
Tip: The climb is over 200 steps, but the stairs are well-maintained.
The Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is an oval-shaped square that was built on the ruins of a Roman amphitheater. It is now a lively public space lined with cafes, shops, and restaurants.
Tip: Look for the arches on the side of the square where you can still see the original Roman structure.
The Cathedral, or Duomo di San Martino, is a Romanesque church with a façade. The interior holds a collection of art, most notably the Volto Santo di the area (Holy Face ).
Tip: Look for the sculpted labyrinth on the exterior wall of the church.
The area is the birthplace of the great opera composer Giacomo Puccini. His childhood home has been turned into a museum, where you can see original furnishings, personal belongings, and the piano.
Tip: Checking the local schedule for a Puccini concert in one of the city's small churches.
The Via Fillungo is the main shopping street. It is a bustling, winding thoroughfare lined with historic buildings, elegant boutiques, and cafes. It's a great place to people-watch and to find unique Tuscan souvenirs.
Tip: Wander off the main street and into the side alleys to discover hidden shops and quaint artisan workshops.
