The museum houses significant collections, including the largest single collection of works by native son Clarence Holbrook Carter and “Art of the Ancients,” featuring prehistoric Native American objects.
Tip: The museum is located in a beautiful old bank building, adding a layer of architectural interest to the exhibits.
Walk along the Scioto Heritage Trail, which ties into the Ohio River Scenic Byway near the Floodwall Murals. Enjoy the views from Riverfront Park, a great spot to relax, enjoy a picnic, and watch the barges and boats float by on the Ohio River.
Tip: The park is easily accessible from the downtown area and provides a peaceful respite near the water.
Sample the local culinary offerings. Portsmouth is known for its eateries, including Portsmouth Brewing Company (Ohio's oldest operating brewery), and local favorites specializing in smoked meats, like Scioto Ribber. Don't forget to grab a coffee at one of the unique local coffee houses.
Tip: Look for "Patties & Pints" for great burgers and local craft beer options.
Drive out to see the remaining evidence of the ancient Hopewell culture. While some larger sites are distant (like Serpent Mound), the Mound Park in the city contains one of the last remaining horseshoe-shaped Indian burial grounds in the area open to the public.
