Overview
Post Office Bay, located on the northern coast of Floreana Island in the Galápagos archipelago, is less about a traditional "port" and more about a unique, historical landing site known for its extraordinary postal system. This unassuming cove became famous in the late 18th century when British whalers placed a wooden barrel here to serve as an informal mailbox. Sailors, far from home for years, would leave unstamped letters in the barrel, hoping that passing ships heading in the direction of the letter's destination would pick it up and hand-deliver it.
This fascinating tradition, rooted in human ingenuity and the kindness of strangers, continues to this day. Visitors to Post Office Bay are encouraged to drop off their own postcards (without stamps!) and sift through the existing mail, taking any letters they can hand-deliver near their home. Beyond this unique human history, Floreana Island offers glimpses of diverse wildlife, interesting geological formations like lava tubes, and a rich, sometimes mysterious, human settlement history.
